Challenges for robots in our everyday life

22 octobre 2014 - Campus Jussieu

«We have brought robots into certain aspects of our everyday worlds, including floor cleaning in homes, and working side by side with people in factories. In both cases intuitive easy to use interfaces and safety for people have been important aspects of the design in order to make robots acceptable. In this talk we will look at real life stories of how these robots have been used. Looking forward, amongst the many challenges facing our world is the demographic inversion that is playing out over the next forty years. In Europe, North America, Japan, and China we will have a much larger proportion of elderly people than in the past. Without a large cadre of younger people to provide care to the elderly I believe that we will need many more robotic capabilities in our homes so that people of my generation will be able to live longer in their own homes independently and with dignity.»
